Kim's picks - week 38: FAUNA

Wow! What an amazing week, a visual feast of fauna!
The word resonate is often used by the admin team when explaining how we come to choose the pics for the week and in an attempt to make choosing pics easier I researched the word resonate a little further. Often referred to when talking about the echo or reverberation of a sound, I wondered how this could relate to illustrations and came to the conclusion that when I look at an illustration does it hold my attention for a length of time, do I dwell on it, do I think about it once I have moved on? With my choices for this week I think it is fairly obvious that I am an Australian as many of my pics are of Australian fauna, which I adore and I have certainly thought of them when away from the wall! I may be somewhat bias but I think we have some of the cutest fauna in the world!! Thank you all for a wonderful week, and to my Dad, enjoy the special pic just for you!

meet challenge member: Melissa Tan

Melissa Tan

1. Your name, location
Melissa Tan,
Living in sunny Singapore

Week 17 2014: HORSE by Melissa Tan

2. Describe your family
I’ve been married for 12 years to my architect husband who often rolls his eyes at my lack of perspective and total disregard for composition. My dad loves to draw and paint as much as I do while my mom channels her creativity into making quilted bags. As is probably obvious from my artwork, we like animals and have a bunch of dogs and cats.

Week 7 2015: FARM

3. Describe your work
Hmm. I like simple lines and just a  few colors against a plain white background to make the illustration stand out (also to be honest, I have no idea how to paint backgrounds in…). Most of my artwork is pretty small, and it’s getting even tinier now that I’m exploring micro-painting and have acquired a new stash of 10/0 brushes. My bookshelves are weighed down with hundreds of children’s picture books, all bought in the name of research, of course.

Week 19 2015: EAT

5. Describe your art background
A mix between being genetically enriched (refer to “describe your family”) and just lots and lots of practice.

Week 51 2014: SILHOUETTE

6. What do you love about the Challenge? What have you learned?
The challenge makes me think out of the box. It’s wonderful seeing everybody’s interpretations of a topic, and then I’ll try to figure out how I can make it mine. It’s so humbling, but also confidence-boosting to have had many of my submissions make it to the weekly picks.

Week 34 2014: BUTTERFLY by Melissa Tan

7. What is your favourite illustration you have done for the challenge so far?
Anything related to Christmas inspires me. This was my first attempt at some kind of realism and I’m really happy with how it turned out (It’s some kind of Norwegian Christmas roll thing…)
Week 51 2015: CHRISTMAS by Melissa Tan

8. Tell us something that we don’t know about you
I’m at my happiest when  surrounded by animals.
Week 9 2015: TEXTURE by Melissa Tan

sally's picks - week 37: GEOMETRIC

Well it was interesting doing the picks this week.  I always pick the images that immediately jump out at me, elicit a 'wow' or 'cool' from my lips, and make me zoom in to get a closer look.  Often I end up picking the same people as I picked the last time, even though I don't look at names when I pick.  I guess I am just drawn to their style.  However this week I noticed that the images I picked were mostly from people I have not picked before.  Hope you enjoy my picks.  Thanks for participating!
